What a beer really costs in Central Europe

A promise of “€2 pints” tells you very little without a pub, date and serving size. Central Europe includes several currencies and very different drinking venues. A neighbourhood lager, a craft beer and a drink beside a major square will not have one regional price.

Check the menu in the local currency. Convert it for your own budget if useful, but pay attention to the price actually charged rather than a rounded euro figure in a travel article.

Compare the same amount

A 0.5-litre beer is slightly smaller than a British pint. A 0.3-litre serving is smaller again, so a low menu number may simply mean less beer. Read the volume beside the price.

For a dated example, Lokál Dlouhááá's drinks menu listed 0.5 litres of Pilsner Urquell at 74 CZK when checked on 8 September 2026. This is one central Prague pub's price, not a Czech national average or a promise about your next visit.

Special pouring styles can also have their own prices and quantities. Ask if the name is unfamiliar rather than assuming every line on the menu describes a full glass of the same drink.

The venue changes the bill

A table-service restaurant, brewery taproom and festival stall offer different settings. Decide what you want from the stop. If you mainly want a short break, choose a place already near your walk instead of spending money travelling across town for a cheaper glass.

Budget for the evening, not one drink

Include food, water and the journey back to your accommodation. Leave the choice of another drink open rather than treating a low price as a reason to order more.
