Buying breakfast at a German bakery
Choose a roll or pastry, check the coffee and seating price, and keep breakfast simple before a day of sightseeing.
A bakery breakfast can be as simple as a roll and coffee. It can also become a much larger bill if you add a filled sandwich, a pastry and a second drink. Start with what you need to keep you comfortable until lunch.
Look at the display before ordering. A plain Brötchen is different from a filled roll, and the price tag may refer to one item rather than a breakfast combination.
Try something that belongs to the place
Germany has strong regional baking traditions. The German tourism board's bread guide describes examples such as Bavarian pretzels and Hamburg's cinnamon-rich Franzbrötchen.
You do not need to chase every speciality. Choose one that looks appealing in a bakery near your accommodation. For a more filling breakfast, look for a roll with a suitable filling or add something you can carry easily.
Check ingredients if you avoid dairy, eggs or meat. A plain-looking pastry can contain butter or egg, while a savoury roll may have a sauce or filling that is hard to see through the display.
Ask about the breakfast offer
If a set breakfast is listed, check whether it includes coffee and what size. Butter, jam, cheese or an extra roll may be separate. Read any seating arrangement before assuming you can use the tables with a takeaway order.
For an early departure, check the bakery's actual opening time the day before. A shop inside a station and a neighbourhood bakery may keep different hours, especially on Sundays or public holidays.
Carry suitable payment if a small shop has a minimum card amount or a cash preference. You can ask before ordering without making it awkward.
Keep the rest for later only if it travels well
A sturdy roll is easier to carry than a cream-filled pastry. Buy what you can eat reasonably soon and keep food protected in your bag. Avoid leaving perishable fillings warm for hours while sightseeing.
