1. Arroios and Anjos: Best for Authentic Budget Travel
Located directly along the Metro Linha Verde (Green Line), Arroios was named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world. It features a diverse mix of international diners, traditional Portuguese tascas serving €8 lunch specials, and boutique hostels priced 20% lower than the downtown historic core. Walking down Avenida Almirante Reis reaches downtown Rossio in 15 minutes.
2. Baixa and Chiado: Best for First-Timers
- Pros: Completely flat terrain reconstructed on a grid after the 1755 earthquake; walking access to Rossio and Cais do Sodré train stations; Metro access on both Blue and Green lines.
- Cons: Premium prices for private rooms; higher tourist density and street solicitation.
3. Alfama: Atmospheric but Inconvenient for Luggage
- Pros: The quintessential Lisbon postcard: narrow winding alleys, fado taverns, and tiled facades that survived the great earthquake.
- Cons: No direct metro access; extremely steep cobblestone stairs; dragging rolling luggage over Alfama’s calçada pavement is difficult.
