Lisbon or Porto: choosing the time for each
Compare Lisbon and Porto by the days you want to spend walking, visiting museums and taking excursions, with clear night counts for a shared trip.
Choose the city that fits your time and interests before comparing a supposed percentage saving. Lisbon has several distinct neighbourhood areas and substantial day trips. Porto's central sights sit closer together, but the hills still take effort and a Douro excursion uses a separate day.
Give Lisbon time for its different areas
Alfama and the central riverfront can form one day, while Belém needs its own travel and visiting time. Sintra works better as a full excursion with one main monument than as an addition after a morning of city sightseeing. Cascais is another day choice, not the same trip under a different name.
If those outings are priorities, give Lisbon more nights. If you mainly want two city days and no palaces, a shorter stay can be enough for your own plan without pretending you have seen everything.
Keep Porto city and the valley separate
The historic centre, Ribeira and Gaia can fill a comfortable full day, with another day for Serralves, a neighbourhood or the coast. A cellar visit in Gaia is different from travelling to an estate in the Douro. The valley needs the rail journey, an appointment and often another transfer.
Read the Porto guide before choosing a room solely for its river view. The climb from the waterfront to the higher streets matters in the evening and with bags.
Count nights and moving days honestly
For seven nights, one suggested split is four in Lisbon and three in Porto. That gives three full Lisbon days, a moving day and two full Porto days when arrival and departure are outside those full days. For seven calendar days including arrival and departure, our classic Portugal itinerary instead uses three nights in each city.
The Lisbon–Porto journey needs its own part of the day. Campanhã is not São Bento, and a hotel transfer does not count as sightseeing time in both cities.
Compare the trip you would actually take
Price rooms on the same dates and occupancy, then add the paid visits and excursions you want. A Lisbon stay with several palace tickets cannot fairly be compared with a Porto stay made entirely of free walks. Use the Lisbon guide to choose those activities first, then adjust the budget around them.
