In Prague and Budapest, aggressive promoters on streets like Wenceslas Square or Váci utca hand out flyers for 'gentlemen’s clubs' or friendly cocktail bars.

How the Hostess Scam Works

Friendly local women strike up conversations with solo male travelers or small groups outside a legitimate bar. They suggest moving to another 'cool underground spot' they know. Once inside, the women order drinks (often marked on obscure menus as 'special champagne'). When the bill arrives 30 minutes later, the venue demands €500 to €1,500. Intimidating security guards block the door until the bill is paid or the victim is escorted to an ATM.

• The Rule: Never follow stranger promoters or attractive locals into second venues. Stick to established ruin bars (Szimpla Kert, Instant) or neighborhood craft beer pubs with published menu prices.
