Choosing a taxi without an unpleasant surprise

At an airport or station, follow signs to the official taxi rank or the pickup point for the service you booked. An unsolicited offer inside arrivals is not a substitute for checking who is taking you and how the fare will be calculated.

There is no single taxi rule for all of Europe. Some journeys use a meter, some have regulated fixed fares and app bookings may quote a price with stated conditions. Look up the local system before landing.

Agree what the price covers

For a fixed fare, confirm the destination and whether the quoted amount includes relevant tolls, airport charges or other permitted supplements. A price for the city centre may not cover a hotel beyond the boundary.

For a metered journey, check that the meter is being used as required locally. If you need to pay by card, confirm the accepted method before setting off. Do not assume a cash-only claim is lawful everywhere, or that every European taxi must accept cards.

In London, TfL explains that licensed black taxis can be hailed or taken from a rank, while minicabs must be booked through a licensed operator. Compare the driver's and vehicle's details with the booking confirmation.

Keep the destination clear

Show the full address, including the town if similar street names exist nearby. A saved map pin can help, but check that it points to the entrance you need. Tell the driver about a planned extra stop before the journey begins.

Keep the booking record and ask for a receipt. Note the vehicle details if you need to query the fare later. If you feel threatened, prioritise reaching a safe place over arguing about the bill.

Compare the whole journey

For several people with luggage, a legitimate taxi can be a reasonable choice. Compare its total with public-transport tickets and the final walk to your accommodation. The cheapest option is not useful if it stops running before your flight arrives.
