The London Airport Transfer Trap
London has six commercial international airports, and private rail operators spend millions advertising premium airport express trains to arriving tourists. In almost every case, a standard municipal commuter train or tube line runs on the exact same tracks for less than half the price.
1. London Heathrow (LHR)
Elizabeth Line (Best Balance of Speed and Price)
- Duration: 35 to 40 minutes to central London (Tottenham Court Road or Liverpool Street).
- Frequency: Every 15 minutes.
- Fare: 13.30 Pounds peak / 13.30 Pounds off-peak (tap contactless card).
- Verdict: Comfortable air-conditioned trains with luggage racks that run right through the heart of the city without requiring an inconvenient change at Paddington.
Piccadilly Line Tube (Cheapest)
- Duration: 50 to 60 minutes.
- Frequency: Every 4 to 6 minutes.
- Fare: 5.60 Pounds off-peak / 5.60 Pounds peak.

Heathrow Express (Avoid for Budget Travel)
- Duration: 15 minutes.
- Fare: 25.00 Pounds walk-up single.
- Verdict: Drops you at Paddington, where you must transfer to the Tube and pay an additional fare anyway. Arrives only 15 minutes faster than the Elizabeth line while costing twice as much.
