The Three Core Ticket Types
1. Advance Singles (Cheapest)

Split Ticketing: The Legal Loophole
Split ticketing is completely legal under National Rail Conditions of Travel. Because of historic pricing formulas between regional operators, buying separate tickets for segments of the same physical journey is often vastly cheaper than one through-ticket.
- Example: A through-ticket from London to Manchester might cost 75 Pounds. By splitting the ticket into London to Crewe and Crewe to Manchester on the identical train, the combined fare might drop to 42 Pounds.
- The Golden Rule: The train must physically stop at the station where your tickets split. You do not need to get off or change seats, but the station must be a scheduled stop on your train timetable.
