European Passport Validity Rules: The 3-Month and 10-Year Traps

The Two Schengen Passport Rules

Airlines strictly enforce European Union border entry rules at departure check-in. If your passport fails either of these criteria, airline gate agents will deny boarding:

1. The 3-Month Validity Rule

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. If you plan to leave Europe on August 15, your passport must not expire before November 15.

2. The 10-Year Issue Date Rule

Under Schengen border code Article 6(1)(a), your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years on the day of entry into Europe. (This primarily affects British passport holders whose previous passports were issued with extra rollover months added).
