The 90 Days In / 90 Days Out Strategy

Long-term independent travelers who want to spend 6 to 12 months in Europe can do so legally by alternating between the 29 Schengen member states and adjacent non-Schengen European countries.

The Best Non-Schengen Base Countries

  1. The Western Balkans (Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia): These countries are outside the Schengen Area. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens receive 90 days on independent national clocks. Albania even offers US citizens a 1-year stay visa-free upon arrival.
  2. The United Kingdom: Standard UK visitor rules allow visa-exempt travelers up to 6 months of tourism on an entirely separate legal system.
  3. Cyprus: An EU member state that is not yet part of the Schengen zone, offering a separate 90-day tourist allowance.
