The Ultimate European Rail Adventure

There are few train journeys in the world quite like boarding an evening train in a cosmopolitan European capital and waking up 15 hours later in the frozen sub-polar taiga of the Arctic Circle.

The SJ Arctic Night Train (Tåg 94) runs daily from Stockholm Centralstation all the way to Kiruna, Abisko National Park, and Narvik on the Atlantic coast of northern Norway. Covering over 1,500 kilometers of tracks, it is an essential journey for winter aurora hunters and summer wilderness hikers.

Sleeping Accommodations on Board

  • Seats (Budget Option): Standard airline-style reclining seats in open carriages. Only recommended for strict budget backpackers, as sleeping upright for 15 hours can be exhausting.
  • Couchette (Liggvagn, Best Value): Shared 6-berth compartments with fold-down padded bunks. SJ provides sheets, a duvet, and a pillow for each bed. Male, female, and mixed compartments are available. Fares typically start at 550 to 850 SEK (48 to 75 Euros) including travel and berth.
  • Sleeper Compartment (Sovvagn, Premium Comfort): Classic 2-berth or 3-berth private compartments with thicker spring mattresses and an in-compartment washbasin. High-end 1st class cabins even feature a private en-suite shower and toilet. Fares range from 950 to 1,600 SEK (84 to 140 Euros) per person.

The Dining Car (Krogen)

One of the great pleasures of the Arctic sleeper train is spending the evening in the bistro restaurant carriage. The onboard cafe serves hot Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, creamy smoked salmon pasta, local northern craft beers, cinnamon buns, and coffee.

Booking Tips and Seasonality

  • Booking Window: Tickets go on sale on sj.se roughly 90 days in advance. Book early for winter travel (December to March) and summer hiking season (July and August), as sleeper berths sell out weeks ahead.
  • Abisko National Park: If your goal is Northern Lights viewing, continue past Kiruna to Abisko Turiststation. Located in a natural rain shadow beside Lake Torneträsk, Abisko has some of the clearest winter skies in the Arctic, making the Aurora Sky Station one of the most reliable viewing spots on earth.
