Stockholm to Kiruna by night train: booking and the Boden change
Plan the overnight journey to Kiruna with the current Boden change, sleeping-place choices, station transfer and a flexible arrival day.
Before booking the night train to Kiruna, open the full journey details. The picture of a sleeper cabin tells you little about the morning. On the current route, you leave the night train at Boden and continue north in a seat.
That can still be a useful way to travel. You just need to choose the sleeping product, pack for the change and leave enough room in the arrival day.

A checked SJ departure from Stockholm Central on 14 September 2026 leaves at 18:12 and reaches Kiruna at 09:34 the following morning. It includes 19 minutes at Boden between the night train and the onward InterCity. The full journey is 15 hours 22 minutes.
This is a dated example, not a timetable for every day. Other results can take much longer and include replacement buses. Check the actual route, changes and arrival before booking accommodation around it.
The new northern rail contract plans through service from December 2026. Until your booking actually shows that service, follow the changes listed on the ticket. A future announcement does not turn an earlier journey into a direct sleeper.
A seat and a sleeping place are different purchases
The cheapest headline price can be for a seat. Open the sleeping options and enter everyone travelling before comparing a berth or compartment. Check whether you are buying a shared space or the whole compartment, and which parts of the journey have that accommodation.
On the checked connection, the onward train from Boden has seats only. Do not expect to stay in bed until Kiruna. Meal inclusions can also differ between products, so check them rather than assuming every sleeping ticket includes breakfast.
Pack for an early change
Keep your ticket, phone, charger, water, warm layer and morning essentials in a small bag. Have the larger bag ready to move before Boden. Set an alarm with enough time to dress and gather your things without disturbing the whole compartment at the last moment.
Read the platform information and follow staff advice if a delay affects the connection. A through booking is easier to manage than several unrelated tickets, but read the actual terms before relying on a particular protection.
Kiruna station is outside the new centre
The station information describes an unmanned station about six kilometres from the centre, with no food or coffee sales. The municipal transfer bus is free and links the station with the centre. Use its current timetable rather than an old screenshot.
Check your accommodation's current address and baggage-drop arrangements. A lodge pickup, airport bus and station shuttle are different services. Confirm the one you need before the train arrives.
Leave the first afternoon open
A short walk, lunch and an indoor visit may be enough after an interrupted night. Keep the expensive timed excursion for a later day where possible. Bring food for the arrival if your room is away from the centre.
