Baltic ferries: choose the right trip, terminal and cabin

The first ferry choice is not the cabin. It is whether you want to move to another city, return the same day or stay onboard for a round-trip cruise. Offers for those trips can look similar while delivering very different journeys.

Choose the route and direction first. Then compare the total for your group, the terminal at each end and the time you will have after leaving the ship.

Stockholm to Helsinki is an overnight move

For this journey, choose a one-way passenger booking if you intend to stay in Helsinki. A two-night cruise returning to Stockholm is a different product, even when its headline price looks lower.

Tallink Silja sails from Värtahamnen in Stockholm to Olympia Terminal in Helsinki. Viking Line uses Stockholm's Stadsgården terminal and Helsinki's Katajanokka. Do not travel to a port simply because another ferry left from there on a previous trip.

Allow roughly 17–18 hours at sea on a suitable overnight sailing and confirm your actual date. Departure and arrival are shown in local time, with Finland one hour ahead of Sweden. The Stockholm–Helsinki route helps you plan the move around those details.

Helsinki to Tallinn needs a different terminal plan

Choose both outward and return departures before treating Tallinn as a day trip. Tallink MyStar and Megastar use West Terminal 2 in Helsinki and Terminal D in Tallinn. Eckerö’s Finlandia uses the same Helsinki terminal but Tallinn Terminal A. Viking XPRS leaves Helsinki’s Katajanokka and also uses Terminal A in Tallinn.

Compare time ashore as well as the crossing

Tallink shuttles take about two hours. Eckerö’s Finlandia takes roughly 2 hours 15 minutes on daytime departures, or 2 hours 30 minutes on the late sailing. Viking XPRS varies by departure, from around 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes.

Those are sailing times. Add travel to the terminal, boarding and the journey into Tallinn. From Terminal D, allow roughly 20–25 minutes to walk towards the old town, with more time for your pace, luggage and final destination.

Tallink’s passenger guidance closes online check-in 30 minutes before departure and the gate 20 minutes before. Use the deadline for your operator and ticket, arriving earlier. A mobile boarding card does not mean you can turn up when the ship is due to leave.

For a day trip, choose a walk, lunch and perhaps one main paid visit. Work backwards from return boarding before adding another district. If you want a slow dinner or more time in the old town, compare an overnight stay. Helsinki and Tallinn use the same local time; the one-hour difference applies between Sweden and Finland.

The Helsinki–Tallinn route gives the shorter journey comparison. Check the actual passenger service: Vuosaari and Muuga are different ports from the central terminals above, and some sailings have vehicle or freight restrictions.

Compare a whole booking, not the cabin headline

Enter the number and ages of travellers before comparing prices. A berth in shared accommodation and a private cabin are different purchases. Check whether the displayed total includes all passengers, the cabin, compulsory fees and any vehicle.

Meals and transfers may be extra. An inside cabin can suit a one-way sleeping journey, while a window may matter more when the ship itself is part of the holiday. Buy the option you will use rather than the largest package shown first.

Reach the correct terminal early enough

Use the operator's passenger check-in and boarding instructions. Arriving at the terminal at the ship's departure time is too late. Vehicle passengers and foot passengers can have different procedures, and a mobile boarding card does not remove every deadline.

Pack a small overnight bag with medicines, a charger and what you need in the cabin. Read the access arrangements for anything left in a vehicle. Keep travel documents accessible and check the requirements for everyone travelling.

Count the night only once

If you leave Stockholm in the afternoon and sleep on the ferry, remove the Stockholm hotel night that the cabin replaces. Add the full ferry booking separately. On arrival in Helsinki, your next hotel may not offer a room immediately, so arrange baggage storage and keep the morning flexible.
