While luxury cave suites in Oia with infinity plunge pools command €500+ a night, Santorini has an efficient public bus system and plenty of budget family guesthouses on the eastern side of the island.

Where to Stay on a Budget

• Perissa / Perivolos (Black Sand Beach): Clean guesthouses and hostels with pools cost €25 to €45 per night in shoulder season. Direct beach access, cheap bakeries, and frequent buses to Fira.
• Karterados: A traditional village a flat 15-minute walk from Fira. Quiet local bakeries, family tavernas, and room rates 60 percent lower than Fira.

The Public Bus System (KTEL)

All KTEL Santorini buses radiate from the central bus terminal in Fira. Fares cost €1.80 to €2.40 paid in cash to the conductor. Buses meet every arriving ferry at Athinios port, so you never need to pay €40 for an unmetered taxi.

The Fira to Oia Caldera Hike (100 Percent Free)

Skip the expensive sunset catamaran cruises (€120+). The 10-kilometer hiking trail from Fira through Firostefani and Imerovigli to Oia runs along the rim of the volcanic caldera. It takes 3 to 4 hours, offers the finest photo angles in Greece, and is completely free.
