Santorini on a budget: choose the room before the extras
Compare Fira and beach bases, use the right bus fare and build a daily plan that includes your accommodation and chosen visits.
Decide what you want from Santorini before comparing the room prices. If you mainly want caldera views, staying close to the rim may be worth the extra cost. If you want beach mornings with one or two sightseeing trips, a room around Kamari or Perissa gives you a different holiday to compare.
The useful question is how the location changes your whole day. Look at the stop nearest the room, the slope of the walk and the last bus back. A beach address does not automatically mean easy access to every caldera village.
Start with a complete daily example
This example uses the same simple private-room plan as our Santorini city guide. It assumes two adults share a room costing €110 in total, including mandatory accommodation charges. The meal and small-extra figures are chosen allowances, not restaurant quotes.

For one person paying for the entire room, the same day is €184. Ferry or flight tickets, airport or port transfers, boat trips and paid beach setups are outside this example. Replace the room amount with an actual booking for your dates. On a day without Akrotiri, remove that ticket rather than treating it as compulsory daily spending.
Use either this calculation or the city calculator as your starting point. Adding the two totals together would count the same room and meals twice.
Understand the Fira bus connection
Fira is the useful bus interchange for many island journeys. The KTEL fare list lists ordinary fares of €2.20 for Fira–Oia, €2.20 for Fira–airport, €2.70 for Fira–Perissa and €2.70 for Fira–Athinios port. Night fares differ.
Two separate rides mean two fares. If your route changes in Fira, allow time for the second bus rather than adding only the minutes spent aboard. Read the current timetable for the last return, particularly after an evening in Oia.
Athinios is the ferry port below the island roads. It is not Fira's old port beneath the caldera, and it is not the airport. Arrange the correct transfer before arrival and allow extra time for port traffic on departure day.
Choose one substantial outing each day
Akrotiri has a €20 standard ticket for the archaeological site. Its covered remains make a different kind of visit from an exposed viewpoint walk, though you still need transport and the correct opening day.
For a Fira–Oia walk, plan for uneven ground, slopes and long exposed stretches. Start with the weather and your own energy. Carry water, wear suitable shoes and decide how to return before setting off. A shorter section can give you the view without turning the whole afternoon into a hot endurance walk.
On a beach day, establish whether you can use your own towel and what a paid setup includes. Ask about loungers, umbrellas and any minimum spend before settling down. You can then decide whether that comfort matters more than another paid excursion.
