Santorini is easier to plan when you decide whether the trip is about caldera views, beaches or getting around the island. Choose the room for that priority, then leave time for the journeys between the port, Fira and your base.

Choose the stay you want to pay for
A room in Fira helps if you will use several bus routes. Kamari and Perissa make more sense when beach time is the priority. Oia and other caldera-side addresses can put the view at your door, but compare the full room price and access before deciding that is where most of the budget should go.
Ask whether the room is reached by steps and where a taxi can stop. “Near Fira” does not tell you whether the walk is comfortable with luggage or after dark. A kitchen can be useful, provided shops are within a journey you are happy to repeat.
Get the three arrival points straight
Inter-island ferries use Athinios. The airport is a separate arrival point, and the old harbour below Fira is not the place to catch a scheduled ferry to another island. Put the full place name into your transfer booking.
KTEL's fare table lists €2.20 for Fira–Airport and €2.70 for Fira–Athinios. Fira–Oia is €2.20 and Fira–Perissa €2.70. These are ordinary daytime singles; overnight rates differ. If your journey changes at Fira, allow for another ticket and a wait.
Make the caldera walk fit the weather
You can enjoy the scenery on a short walk rather than committing to the entire Fira–Oia route. Longer sections involve uneven ground, climbs and exposed stretches. Start with enough water, check the forecast and settle the return journey before walking away from your base.
Leave space in the evening after a long outing. You do not need a paid sunset package every night. Use public paths and viewpoints without entering private terraces or blocking narrow lanes for photographs.
Give Akrotiri its own visit
The Ministry of Culture's Akrotiri information lists a €20 ordinary adult entry. Add the journey there separately, and check current opening arrangements when choosing the day. A sightseeing ticket is not a general island transport pass.
For a beach afternoon, establish what a lounger setup costs and where you can use your own towel. The black sand can become hot, so footwear is useful even for a short walk from the bus.
Before leaving for Naxos, Mykonos or Heraklion, check the sailing on your actual date. Leave a mainland night before an important separately booked flight when possible. Our Santorini budget article shows how to count room sharing and local journeys.

Akrotiri Archaeological Ruins
€20.00Booking and rates: Buy the Akrotiri site ticket and check the opening day before arranging the bus. Treat other Santorini museums as separate purchases unless the ticket explicitly includes them.
Ways to save: Caldera viewpoints are separate outdoor alternatives. A free walk does not include admission to Akrotiri.

€2.20Airport buses run towards Fira. From there, change for Oia, Perissa or another part of the island if needed. The €2.20 fare is the ordinary airport–Fira journey; night fares differ. Read the timetable for your arrival date rather than assuming a bus meets every flight.

€2.70Athinios is the main ferry port, below the island roads. The ordinary bus fare to Fira is €2.70, with onward island buses paid separately. Port traffic can slow the climb. Confirm a departure for your sailing and arrange a transfer if the bus timing does not work.

Compare a takeaway lunch with a seated meal and check whether a terrace price is for the food, the view or both. Keep water and a snack with you on longer walks.
Worth Paying For
Akrotiri suits visitors interested in the island's ancient settlement. A caldera-view meal can also be worth choosing once if the setting is part of the trip you want.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a full caldera hike in unsuitable heat or wind. A shorter public walking section can give you the scenery without turning the day into an endurance test.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Avoid booking a transfer to “Santorini port” without naming Athinios. A cheap room may add several paid rides, while a sunset reservation can tie the evening to one crowded spot.
