Food markets in Bordeaux and Marseille

Bordeaux and Marseille both have a market called Capucins, but they are different places. Save the full address before navigating. A photo or recommendation that names only “Les Capucins” can easily send you towards information for the wrong city.

Decide whether you want to buy ingredients, put together lunch or sit at a counter. A market can offer all three, but their prices and opening hours may differ.

Bordeaux's Marché des Capucins

Bordeaux's tourism board describes Capucins as a place for produce shopping and eating on site. Its published hours are Tuesday to Friday from 6am to 2pm, and weekends from 5:30am to 2:30pm. Check before going, including the hours of any individual food counter you want.

A morning visit gives you time to browse before choosing lunch. Compare the portion and full price if you want seafood or a sharing plate. A small tasting price is not the same as a meal for two.

You can also buy bread, fruit and a modest amount of cheese for later, provided you can store perishable food appropriately. Ask for the quantity you need instead of accepting a much larger piece by default.

Marseille's Noailles market

The Marseille tourist office's Capucins listing identifies the market in Noailles. The surrounding streets have food shops and places to eat, making the area useful for a slower browse rather than a single famous stall.

Look at displayed prices and units. Produce priced per kilo needs a different calculation from a prepared item priced per piece. Ask before handling delicate fruit or photographing a seller closely.

Keep the visit easy

Bring a small bag and suitable payment. Keep valuables secure while reaching for money, and move aside after buying so other shoppers can use the stall.
