Choosing a London base in zones 2 and 3
Compare London rooms by the full journey, actual fare zones, airport connection and late-night return, not the room price alone.
A zone number tells you about fares, not whether an address will suit your holiday. Before choosing a cheaper room, try the journey from its exact postcode to two places you want to visit and to your arrival airport. Add the walk at both ends.
Compare a room with a useful connection
A base in Hammersmith can suit west-London plans and Piccadilly line access towards Heathrow. Around Greenwich, allow for the river crossing or rail connection before a West End evening. Stratford offers several transport choices, but the station entrance and the final walk still matter. These are areas to compare on your dates, not claims that every room there is cheap.
Use the TfL journey planner with the actual address. Check changes, step-free needs and the return at the time you expect to travel. A neighbourhood can have several stations with different lines and fare zones.
Calculate the saving for the whole group
Imagine two travellers choosing between a £150 room and a £130 room. The cheaper room saves £20 each night for the pair. If both need zones 1–3 travel instead of zones 1–2 and reach the ordinary daily caps, their combined cap difference is £3.20. That leaves £16.80 of the room saving before any other extra journey.
This is a chosen example, not a quote for those rooms. It also assumes both people reach the caps. Fewer rides, a different route or an airport journey changes the calculation.
TfL’s adult fare table lists ordinary daily caps of £8.90 for zones 1–2 and £10.50 for zones 1–3. Follow the touch-in and touch-out rules and use one eligible card or device consistently for each person. Those caps do not mean every airport service is included.
Check the room terms as carefully as the map
Compare the number of guests, private or shared bathroom, cancellation deadline and full price. Read recent comments about sleep and the final walk from the station, rather than relying only on an overall score.
For an apartment, confirm cleaning charges, check-in arrangements and what the kitchen contains. If breakfast is included, adjust your food budget instead of counting another breakfast allowance. A small room near the journeys you need can be more useful than a larger one with awkward transfers.
Test the awkward journey before paying
Look at the early airport departure or the return after a show. Some Tube routes run overnight only on particular days, and engineering work can change the plan. Compare the cost and practicality of a backup if the chosen service stops before you need it.
