How to find a better-value stay in Switzerland
Compare Swiss hostels, simple hotels and guesthouses using meals, guest cards, transport access and the full cost of membership.
In Switzerland, accommodation can include benefits that change the rest of your budget. A room with breakfast or a useful local guest card may work out better than a cheaper one without them.
Start with the places you want to visit. A low room rate several connections away from your plans can be a false economy.
Check hostel membership properly
Swiss Youth Hostels currently advertises a CHF7 discount per person per night for members in its membership benefits. The membership price page lists CHF15 a year for travellers up to 26 and CHF30 from age 27.
For one adult aged 27 or over, five qualifying nights produce CHF35 of room discounts against a CHF30 membership cost. That is an illustrative break-even calculation using the published prices, before considering other benefits or special offers.
Check the rules for your household or group. Do not add individual memberships automatically if a different arrangement applies.
Read the meal and kitchen details
Look for breakfast in the actual rate. If you want to cook, confirm that the property has a guest kitchen and that it is available during your stay.
The hostel network’s FAQ covers kitchens, linen, towels and bathrooms. Check the individual property too, particularly when comparing a dorm bed with a private room or a simple hotel.
A meal package may suit a rural stay where alternatives are limited. In a city, nearby shops and cafés may give you more flexibility.
Give a guest card its real value
A local guest card can save on transport, but it is not a national rail pass. For example, the BaselCard includes eligible local second-class transport for qualifying overnight guests. Its coverage does not extend to every cross-border outing or mountain excursion.
Ask the accommodation which card is included, when it becomes valid and whether your planned route is covered. Count only the journeys you would otherwise pay for.
Price the entire stay
Compare room charges, visitor tax, meals, parking if needed and travel to your planned activities. Check the final return connection before choosing a rural property without a car.

Three checks before you pay
Ask the property these questions in one message: which card is included, when it starts, and whether the route from your arrival station is covered. In Ticino, the ordinary card validity starts at check-in. In Geneva, eligible accommodation can arrange a digital local card before arrival. A room just over a national or municipal boundary may follow different rules.
