A useful first day

Start around Serdika, where the modern transport hub and traces of the Roman city sit close together. Walk towards Saint George Rotunda and the National Theatre area, leaving time to stop rather than following a long checklist. Comfortable shoes help on uneven paving.

Continue towards Alexander Nevsky Cathedral when the church is open to visitors. Give worshippers space and follow the signs about photography. The cathedral is a working church; a sightseeing visit should fit around its services.

Choose the right indoor visit

The Museum of Christian Art in the cathedral crypt is a separate museum. Its standard ticket is €10, with a €2 Thursday rate. Compare that with the collection you actually want to see: a combined gallery ticket only helps if you will visit the included branches.

Keep this as a rain option, or choose a gallery for a full afternoon. Do not squeeze a museum between two journeys simply because it is near the next landmark.

Metro tickets without the guesswork

The metro operator distinguishes a single metro ticket from 30 Plus, even though both cost €0.80. With 30 Plus, validate on each vehicle or at the metro gate within the initial 30-minute window. You may finish the last journey after the window ends.

For several journeys, compare the €2 day card with the €3 24-hour card, which includes night transport. Two ordinary €0.80 journeys cost less than the day card. Keep the same payment medium available for inspection and check any card-issue charge before buying.

Arriving with a bag

The airport metro serves Terminal 2. From Terminal 1, follow the airport's signs for the terminal shuttle before entering the metro. Allow roughly 25 minutes on the train towards the centre, then add waiting and the walk to your room. Late arrivals need the actual last-train time, not just the daytime journey estimate.

Sofia Central railway station, Central Bus Station and Serdika bus station are close but distinct. The latter two have different entrances on Maria Luiza Boulevard. Read the name and address on the booking, especially before an international coach.

Give an excursion its own day

Rila Monastery needs a booked return journey. The monastery no longer lists the old direct public bus as an available option. A shared tour may stop at Boyana Church first, so check the included visits and return time before paying.

For a shorter stay, leave the excursion out and keep a relaxed second day in Sofia. Our Plovdiv connection is useful when continuing east, but travel and station transfers still take a meaningful part of the day.
