Rila is a day excursion from Sofia. Return to your Sofia room after the monastery and take the Plovdiv train the following morning. You do not need to move your luggage to the monastery or arrange a direct Rila–Plovdiv transfer for this plan.
The monastery says regular public transport has not been restored. Book a return shuttle or another suitable transfer. Rila Shuttle advertises a shared two-way outing from €19.99, with the actual price set by date and availability. A Boyana stop can be part of the route, so allow around three hours outward rather than assuming a direct two-hour bus.
Museum tickets, meals and any guiding extras are separate. The monastery's History Museum costs €5 for a standard adult. Check the voucher’s pickup point and departure instructions, dress modestly and return to Sofia in the evening. The Sofia–Plovdiv train takes about 2h40–3h10 on suitable direct services. Choose a first afternoon that still works after reaching your room. In Plovdiv, the Ancient Theatre costs €3.58 for an ordinary adult visit; read the included-site list before choosing a combined ticket.
For Plovdiv–Veliko Tarnovo, confirm the dated coach from North Bus Station. Keep the day for travel and arrival, with Tsarevets on the following day. If the direct coach does not suit your date, compare a connection through Sofia and allow the full time between its stations. Do not book a fortress slot close to arrival.
The return to Sofia needs roughly three to four hours by coach, plus the final city or airport journey. Leave a buffer before a separate booking or stay another night.
