Split the city into two walks

Use the flatter pedestrian centre and Kapana for your first orientation. Then give the Old Town a separate morning, with a lighter bag and shoes that grip on stone. Calling the whole city flat makes a poor plan for anyone travelling with a pushchair or limited mobility.

On the hill, choose a historic house that interests you and leave time between visits. The point of staying overnight is being able to stop for a drink or a shaded seat without worrying about the last train.

Buy the visits you want

The Old Plovdiv ticket list gives €3.58 as ordinary adult admission to the Ancient Theatre and other eligible individual sites. A five-site ticket costs €10.74, excluding the Small Basilica and Bishop's Basilica. Three eligible singles cost the same as that combination, so do not buy five visits merely to feel you have used it fully.

The basilica combination is a different product. Check the included buildings before choosing it. At the theatre, performances can change sightseeing access, and a normal visitor ticket is not a seat at an evening show.

A second day with room to change your mind

Start with the Roman Stadium's open curved section, then choose a basilica or another house. Keep Kapana for browsing and a meal afterwards. In hot weather, move the uphill walk earlier and use the warmest hours for an indoor stop or a break.

If your first day was shortened by travel, use the second morning for the theatre. There is no need to force every Roman site into one continuous circuit.

Match the station to the journey

Direct trains from Sofia took roughly 2 hours 40 minutes to just over 3 hours in the railway search used for this guide. Services with changes take longer. Use the Sofia–Plovdiv route guide to compare the train with coaches, and check the dated departure before making a museum reservation.

For Burgas, a direct train can make a straightforward onward trip. Coaches to Veliko Tarnovo use a different departure arrangement: the municipality lists that direction at North Bus Station. Confirm the exact station instead of returning automatically to South.

Flying into Plovdiv

The airport shuttle links the terminal with South Bus Station and is tied to scheduled flights. Confirm the service for your flight and the current euro fare with the operator. Keep a transfer quote as a backup if arriving late or with several bags.
