A Plovdiv weekend: Roman sights, hill walks and time in Kapana
Choose a comfortable base in Plovdiv, compare the theatre and basilica tickets, and plan two days around the hills, meals and your arrival station.
Plovdiv works well as a two-night stop between Sofia and the rest of Bulgaria. Staying overnight gives you an evening in Kapana and a morning on the Old Town hills without watching the clock for the last train back. Pick a few interiors you really want to see and let the walks connect them.
Choose your room by the approach
Look near the pedestrian centre or the edge of Kapana if you want restaurants and the Old Town within a manageable walk. A room inside the Old Town can be appealing, but check the slope, steps and luggage access before booking. A short distance on the map does not necessarily mean an easy walk with a suitcase.
Ask how to reach the entrance from your arrival stop. For a late arrival, agree on check-in arrangements and have the address available offline. If you are driving, confirm the actual parking space and its charge rather than assuming that a central address includes parking.
Arrive with the right station in mind
A suitable direct train from Sofia takes about 2h40–3h10 on the checked services. Leave time after the train to reach your room before committing to a paid visit.
Coaches use different stops. Read the full station name on the ticket; a Sofia coach arriving at South Bus Station does not tell you where tomorrow's northbound coach leaves. The municipality lists the Veliko Tarnovo direction at North Bus Station.
If you fly into Plovdiv Airport, the airport shuttle is linked to flights and serves South Bus Station. Confirm that it covers your flight and ask for the current euro fare. Do not plan around a frequent city-bus timetable or copy the old lev price from an older page.
First afternoon: the theatre and the streets around it
Leave your bags, have something to eat and make the Ancient Theatre the main paid stop if Roman history interests you. Standard adult sightseeing admission is €3.58. A concert or other performance has its own ticket and access arrangements, so check the event programme separately.
Continue through the Old Town at a pace that suits the paving and hills. Choose another house or museum only if its opening hours leave enough time to enjoy it. In hot weather, use the middle of the afternoon for an interior or a break, then resume the walk when it is more comfortable.
Spend the evening around Kapana without scheduling every stop. Read the menu before sitting down, check whether a service charge is included and choose a meal that fits your budget. A restaurant close to the sights can still suit you; compare the actual menu rather than deciding from its location alone.
Second day: decide which Roman sites you want to enter
The visible Sphendone section of the Roman Stadium has free access. Its 3D presentation is a separate €3.68 purchase. You can enjoy the remains without buying a cinema ticket.

If you want only the theatre and a walk, the five-site ticket adds spending without helping that plan. It becomes more useful when you have chosen several eligible interiors and have time to reach them. Read the included-site list and validity conditions at purchase.
Leave part of the day for an unhurried lunch and any hill walk you want to add. On a wet day, choose an open museum or basilica and allow extra care on the paving. If walking on slopes is difficult, ask each attraction about its entrance and accessible route before going uphill.
Count the whole stay
Bulgaria uses the euro. Old lev numerals still appear in some older travel material, so check the currency beside every price instead of treating the number as euros.
For a two-night break, start with the full room or bed booking, including mandatory charges. Add meals, the admissions you selected and any local journeys. If you have only one day, keep the theatre, the Old Town streets and a meal in Kapana. Leave the larger ticket combinations and a second hill for a return visit. If you have a third day, use it for the interiors you missed or a slower morning before continuing to your next base.
