The Real Verdict on Transylvania Castles
Transylvania is synonymous with Gothic legends, but not all castles deliver equal value.
1. Peleș Castle (Sinaia) - The Crown Jewel
- The Reality: Commissioned by King Carol I in 1873, Peleș is one of the most stunning neo-Renaissance royal palaces in Europe. The German woodcarving, stained glass, and armor halls are breathtaking.
- Ticket: 50 RON (€10.00) for basic ground floor tour; 100 RON (€20.00) for full palace.
- Verdict: 100 Percent Worth Paying For. It blows away every expectations.
2. Bran Castle - The Commercial Tourist Magnet
- The Reality: Marketed worldwide as 'Dracula Castle', Vlad the Impaler had virtually no connection to this fortress. Inside, rooms are sparsely decorated with Queen Marie furniture, and staircases are packed with tour bus crowds.
- Ticket: 60 RON (€12.00).
- Verdict: Skip Inside, Photograph from Outside. Walk up the meadow behind the castle for photos, then head to Râșnov or Peleș instead.
3. Corvin Castle (Hunedoara) - The True Gothic Masterpiece
- The Reality: A genuine 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance fortress with deep moats, drawbridges, knight halls, and torture towers. It looks like a fantasy movie set.
- Ticket: 40 RON (€8.00).
- Verdict: Must-Visit if traveling between Sibiu and Timișoara.
