The BDZ timetable showed suitable direct services taking about 2 hours 40 minutes to just over 3 hours when checked. Routes with changes can take much longer. Start at Sofia Central railway station and check the train number, reservation requirement and current works notices.
Compare the coach offer carefully
Sofia Central Bus Station advertises Plovdiv tickets from €8.50. FlixBus’s separate offer starts at €20.99 with a minimum journey of 2h15. These are different offers; compare the specific departure, not only the brand or headline duration.
Leave time at both ends
The railway station and South Bus Station in Plovdiv are outside the Old Town. Check whether your coach uses South or another station, then add the walk or local transfer. An uphill room and a timed theatre visit need more margin than an arrival in the flatter centre.
