Nice puts the old town, Cours Saleya market and the seafront close enough for an easy day on foot. The Matisse Museum takes you uphill to Cimiez, while coastal trains open up the Riviera. There is plenty here before you start adding day trips.

Put the old town and the sea together
Our suggested first morning starts around Cours Saleya, then continues through the old-town lanes before returning to the seafront. A small food stop can fit the walk: Chez Marie-Thé lists its socca stand at the market. Order a portion you want to try before adding more food for a full lunch.
Leave the hottest part of the day for a shaded break or an indoor visit. For the beach, take a towel and choose the public section you want. A private bed is an optional comfort purchase, not a requirement for enjoying the waterfront.
Keep city transport separate from coastal trains
Lignes d’Azur explains its urban tickets, day products and airport return. Its one-day pass is listed at €7. Build a day of city rides before choosing it; it does not pay for a TER train to another coastal town.
For a day trip, select one place and a return train that leaves time for dinner in Nice. A morning arrival, lunch and a walk in the same town usually work better than trying to collect several Riviera names before sunset.
A second museum can change the ticket choice
Musée Matisse lists €12 admission and a €15 pass for ten municipal museums over four days. If you want two included collections, price the pass before buying the first ticket. Matisse is closed on Tuesdays.

Choose the Jean Médecin area for trams and a practical walk towards Nice-Ville station, or the old town for evening streets and the seafront. For a room beside a busy square, read recent comments about night noise and ask for a quieter side of the building.
Getting Around
Use Lignes d’Azur for city trams and buses, and a separate rail ticket for TER trips along the coast. A city day pass does not become a Riviera rail pass. For the airport, read the available city products and the separate return-airport ticket before buying at the machine.

€1.70Tram 2 serves both terminals, Jean Médecin and Port Lympia. The €1.70 Solo fare applies with an appropriately loaded Lignes d’Azur card; a new La Carte has a separate €2 deposit. Airport tram machines also offer the €10 Aéro return ticket. Read the available products before buying, validate on board and keep the return ticket for the second trip. Do not assume a bank-card tap buys an ordinary tram ticket.

For a small local lunch, look for socca, a chickpea pancake, around Cours Saleya. Chez Marie-Thé lists a market stand there. Add another small item if you need a full meal, rather than treating a snack portion as an entire day’s food budget.
Worth Paying For
Musée Matisse costs €12 for a single visit, while Nice’s €15 museum pass covers ten municipal museums over four days. If Matisse and another included museum are both on your list, the €3 difference is worth considering. Musée Matisse closes on Tuesdays.
Skip / Save Your Money
The Promenade des Anglais and the old-town lanes make a full outdoor afternoon. Bring water and use a public beach section if you want time beside the sea without hiring a private beach bed.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A ticket sold as an airport return and an ordinary city travel product have different conditions. Also separate public beach access from a beach club’s bed, parasol and service charges when planning a day at the water.
