Choose the base for your actual outings

For a first car-free Provence trip, our suggested starting point is Avignon or Aix-en-Provence. Use the city for meals and evenings, then choose one countryside outing at a time. A village beyond the railway needs a bus, taxi or organised transfer; a regional train pass does not solve that final leg by itself.

The TER Pass Journée has department-based coverage and extra-companion pricing. For two people travelling within one eligible department, the starting total is €25. Compare that with the two return journeys you actually want before buying it.

Give a market day a destination

Aix’s market guide identifies Place Richelme as a daily food market. The wider Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday market gives a longer morning more variety. Plan it before lunch, rather than arriving in the afternoon expecting the same stalls.

For a rural day, carry food and water before leaving the larger town. Decide whether the outing is mainly a village walk, a tasting or a longer hike so you can leave enough time for that activity.

Have an alternative to a closed forest path

The regional fire-risk guide links the department access maps. In Vaucluse, walking advice explains that the next day’s levels are set in the evening. Look up the named area, then use a town or museum day if access is restricted.

Separate Pont du Gard access from parking

Pont du Gard is open to pedestrians and cyclists without a general site-entry fee. Car parking costs €9 per day; the museum spaces and guided visits are separate purchases. If you mainly want to see the aqueduct on a walk, you do not need to buy every indoor option.
