Put the old town and coast together
Start with a walk through Bari Vecchia, then continue to the seafront when you want more space. Around the Basilica di San Nicola, respect worship and the entry instructions for any interior visit. The public lanes are enough for a first look without paying for every add-on tour.

Check the railway operator before buying
For Matera, use Ferrovie Appulo Lucane's timetables. The Bari departure and any change at Altamura belong to a different service from a Trenitalia train down the Adriatic coast. On Sundays and holidays, check the specifically listed replacement-bus arrangements.
For Polignano a Mare, Monopoli or Lecce, search the actual train and station names. The Bari–Lecce route and Bari–Matera route explain the different journeys.
Choose a base for the evenings too
A room near Centrale helps with early departures, but the walk to dinner still matters. In Bari Vecchia, a short distance on a map can lead through steps or narrow lanes. Ask where a taxi can actually stop if you will need one with luggage.
Treat a ferry departure as a separate transfer
Bari's port and railway station are not the same arrival point. Check the terminal, operator's check-in time and travel from the hotel before booking an onward train or boat. For Dubrovnik, read the current route notice rather than assuming a published seasonal crossing is operating.

Where to Stay
Murat puts you between the main station area and the old town. Bari Vecchia offers smaller lanes and older buildings; ask about steps, noise and the final luggage route before booking.
Getting Around
Walk in the centre and along the seafront. Trenitalia, FAL and other regional operators use different services around Bari, so follow the station and platform on your ticket rather than assuming one railway system.
Eating for Less
Focaccia barese can make a simple lunch. Check the price and choose the size you want. For a pasta meal, read the full menu rather than assuming an old-town location guarantees a low price.
