Siena suits a full day of hills, lanes and time around the Campo. The cathedral complex can become the main visit, while the rest of the city rewards a slower walk. Choose your arrival point carefully: the railway station is below the historic centre.

Arrive at the right side of the hill
The bus and railway station offer different starting points. Before travelling from Florence, compare the current bus stop and timetable with the train journey and the climb or local connection from the station. Our Florence–Siena route explains the choice.
If you drive, arrange parking outside restricted streets and ask your accommodation about any permitted access. A central address does not give you permission to drive to its door.
Buy the cathedral visit you want
The cathedral's 2026 Italian tariff lists €7 during ordinary periods and €10 during the specified floor-uncovering periods. The broader OPA SI Pass and the roof route have different inclusions. Select the date and product before comparing prices.
Allow enough time for the visit itself. A pass can look economical on paper but be poor value if you only wanted the cathedral and leave the other sites unused. Religious services can also alter visitor access.
Leave the Campo for a pause
The Campo is a good place to understand the city's shape before choosing another uphill lane. If you want a drink or meal overlooking it, read the seated menu and decide whether the setting is worth the price to you. You can also enjoy the public square without paying for a terrace.
Siena's Palio periods change the atmosphere and access around the centre. A visitor hoping for a quiet city day should compare different dates; someone coming for the event needs a plan built around its arrangements.
Keep a countryside trip separate

Siena Cathedral and Piccolomini Library
€7.00Booking and rates: Ordinary adult cathedral entry is €7, rising to €10 during the uncovered-floor periods. In 2026 these run 27 June–31 July and 18 August–15 November. OPA multi-site passes are different products.

Inside the old centre, evenings are easy to enjoy on foot. Near the station, check the uphill journey and late return before deciding the room saves money. Ask about luggage access if your accommodation is in a restricted street.
Getting Around
Compare the bus arrival near the centre with the train station below it. Siena has restricted traffic areas, so follow your host's access instructions rather than driving towards the closest map pin.
Eating for Less
Try pici or a bowl of Tuscan soup if it fits the menu and weather. Read the price and cover charge before sitting down; a ricciarelli stop can be a small extra rather than a full café meal.
Worth Paying For
A cathedral visit with enough time for the interior and Piccolomini Library where included. Choose a wider pass only if you will visit its other sites.
Skip / Save Your Money
Two tower or rooftop climbs on a short day. Choose the view and physical route you prefer, then leave time for the streets and squares.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The cathedral-only ticket and the wider OPA SI Pass are different products. Floor-uncovering dates change the cathedral price, and the Facciatone is not included in every admission.
