Tuscany Travel Guide
Tuscany is easier to plan once you separate its railway cities from its hill towns and countryside. Florence, Pisa and Siena can fit a public-transport trip, but a rural stay needs a plan for the last few kilometres. Choose one area at a time and leave space for a slow lunch or walk.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
These are separate spending choices, not price or quality rankings. The alternative plan may have a lower total when its room, meal or activity allowances differ.

Decide between a city base and the countryside
A Florence base suits art and rail day trips. Siena puts you in a smaller hill city with different bus options. A rural property offers another kind of stay, but ask how you will reach dinner, groceries and your next destination. A nearby railway station on a map may still be several kilometres away along roads without a useful walking route.
For a short trip without a car, choose a base with a clear arrival and one or two outings. Read the Florence, Pisa and Siena guides before comparing nights.
Plan hill-town buses in both directions
For places such as San Gimignano, search the train and connecting bus as a complete journey. Use Autolinee Toscane for the correct service day and validation rules. A Sunday or holiday timetable can be very different from a weekday.
Arrive with enough time for the last return, and decide what you would do if a connection is missed. Do not assume a taxi will be waiting outside every small-town stop.
Book a tasting as a visit
Ask a winery what the tasting includes, how long it lasts and whether food is available. Match the reservation to your transport. If driving, arrange a non-drinking driver or choose a transfer. A town wine bar can be an easier way to try a few wines without travelling between rural properties.
Keep city and excursion budgets separate
The Florence and Tuscany spending article shows a city-day example. Add the actual train, bus, tour or tasting cost for an outing, rather than assuming Florence's local transport allowance covers it.
If you hire a car, add parking, fuel and any collection conditions to the price. Historic centres often restrict vehicle entry. Ask the property about permitted access before following navigation to its door.

San Gimignano: public streets and skyline
€0.00Booking and rates: The town’s public streets provide views of its towers. Tower climbs, museums, tastings and transport are separate costs.
Ways to save: The public outdoor visit described here has no admission ticket. Paid interiors, transport and guided visits are separate.
Where to Stay
Use a city or town with the transport you need. A farmhouse can suit a quieter stay, but confirm food options, road access and transfers before booking without a car.
Getting Around
Trains connect the main towns, while hilltop places often need a bus and a walk. Check the outward and return together, including Sunday and holiday service. A regional ticket does not turn rural routes into frequent city transport.
Eating for Less
Look for ribollita, pici or other dishes that suit the place and season. Compare the full menu. A wine tasting may need a reservation and transport, so include more than the tasting fee.
Worth Paying For
A small organised countryside outing when it reaches places that are awkward by public transport. Compare the actual itinerary and group size with the time and cost of arranging it yourself.
Skip / Save Your Money
Changing accommodation every night just to cover more names. A useful base and one well-chosen outing can give you more time on the ground.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A one-day tour covering several towns can spend much of the day travelling. Read how long you get in each place and whether food, admissions or tastings are included.
