Cēsis Travel Guide
Cēsis works well for a castle visit, an Old Town wander and an evening without a long return trip. Stay two nights if you also want time on the Gauja trails.

Give the castle enough time
The castle area is a useful first focus, with the Old Town close enough for a relaxed meal afterwards. Decide whether you want the medieval castle alone or the wider complex before reaching the ticket desk. The official price list separates those products and their seasons.
Ticket sales end an hour before closing. An arrival near that limit can leave little time for the visit, so check the opening day before choosing your train. Ask about stairs and access if someone in your group needs an easier route.
Walk a small loop through town
After the castle, use the Old Town streets around Rīgas iela and St John's Church for a walk, then take a break in the park. You do not need to enter every building for the route to feel complete. In rain, the New Castle museum is an option when open; choose it for the collection as well as the shelter.
Two nights make this easier: the arrival afternoon can be a short walk, with the main visit on the following day. One night still works if the train times leave enough usable time.
Add the Gauja as a separate plan
The national park is larger than the town-centre walk. Choose a marked route, establish how you will reach it and check the return transport. A country guesthouse or trailhead that looks nearby can add a long approach without a car.
Take lunch and water on a longer outing. If the forecast is poor, keep the walk short and spend more time in town. A castle day followed by a separate trail day usually leaves more breathing room than trying to combine everything between two trains.
Arrive on a train that reaches Cēsis
Use the Riga–Cēsis route and read the stop list. Some trains on the same line finish at Sigulda. From Sigulda, through services take roughly 35–45 minutes to Cēsis; check the onward connection for the day you need.
For an airport arrival, first reach Riga's railway station from RIX, then take the regional train. Leave room for delays and avoid a fixed castle booking on the arrival afternoon.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace them with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately. Replace the attraction allowance with chosen admissions rather than counting both. A dorm or individual bed is not guaranteed; use the whole room quote if that is what you book.

Cēsis Castle Complex
From €6.00🛏️ Where to Stay
Choose the Old Town or an address between it and the station for a visit without a car. For a countryside stay, arrange the final transfer and food before arrival.
🚇 Getting Around
Direct trains from Riga take roughly 105–120 minutes depending on the service. The Old Town is walkable, while forest outings need their own route and return plan.
🥖 Eating for Less
Have a meal in town before heading towards a trail. Check evening kitchen hours when choosing a room, especially if you arrive after a late train.
Worth Paying For
The adult castle complex ticket is €12 in May–September and €6 in October–April. The medieval castle alone is €8 or €4 in those seasons.
Skip / Save Your Money
The Old Town streets and park walks can fill the rest of the day without another admission. Leave distant Gauja stops for a separate outing.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
The medieval castle, New Castle museum and full complex have different tickets. A short visit may not need the largest combination.
