Kotor Travel Guide

Kotor is tucked at the innermost corner of the dramatic Bay of Kotor, surrounded by sheer limestone peaks. Its UNESCO-listed Venetian walled town is stunning, but cruise ships bring daytime congestion and elevated pricing during high summer.

🛏️ Where to Stay

Do not stay inside the Old Town walls in July or August if you value quiet sleep or low prices. Stay in Dobrota or Muo, both scenic 15 to 25 minute waterfront strolls from the sea gate with private swimming jetties.

🚇 Getting Around

Blue Line local buses run along the bay between Kotor, Dobrota, and Perast for 1.50 Euros per ride. The main intercity bus station is a 10-minute flat walk south of the Old Town.

🥖 Eating for Less

Avoid restaurants on Trg od Oruzja (the main square). Walk down the narrow lane near the north gate to Tanjga for gigantic grilled meat platters at local market rates.

Worth It

Worth Paying For

Hiking the San Giovanni Fortress ramparts (8 Euros) offers legendary fjord panoramas, but only if you climb before 8:30 AM to beat the heat and crowds.

Skip & Save

Skip / Save Your Money

Hike the Ladder of Kotor trail behind the fortress for free; it connects through a small window in the rear fortress wall without paying the 8 Euro entrance.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

Beware of speedboats at the harbor quoting 30 Euros per person for a 15-minute ride to Our Lady of the Rocks; take the local bus to Perast for 1.50 Euros and a shared rowboat for 5 Euros return.
