Lofoten Islands Travel Guide
Lofoten needs a choice of base before it needs a long list of sights. Svolvær, Leknes and the western villages suit different journeys. Stay a few nights, choose a manageable area and leave room for weather to change the order.

Choose the base before the room
Start by choosing the part of Lofoten you want to spend time in. Svolvær can suit an eastern base with organised departures and town services. Leknes is a different starting point for the central islands. Reine and Å put you farther west, where the appeal of the setting needs to be balanced against your transport and shopping plan.
Read a rorbu listing carefully. Check the number of bedrooms, kitchen equipment, cleaning and linen charges, and whether the advertised view belongs to your particular unit. Compare the complete price for the whole stay. Sharing a cabin can change the cost per person substantially, but only if its size and sleeping arrangements fit your group.
Check the whole arrival
Evenes, Svolvær and Leknes are different airports, with different onward journeys. Compare the flight and transfer together before choosing the lowest airfare. Route 300 is an important public bus along the mainland–islands corridor, and current visitor information also lists a dedicated Evenes–Svolvær airport coach. These are separate services with their own stops and tickets.
Use Reis Nordland’s current timetable for route 300 and the local branches you need. A bus along the main road does not necessarily reach your cabin, trailhead or chosen beach. Check the return before leaving the base, and keep some money available for an extra transfer if the timing does not work.
From Tromsø, plan a full travel block with the mainland connection. Do not turn the journey into a day trip just because both places appear under northern Norway. There is no direct railway into Lofoten.
Give one day a cultural focus
Lofotr Viking Museum is at Borg, outside Leknes. It is a useful choice when you want more than a series of landscape stops. The adult admission listed for the main summer period is NOK 265, changing to NOK 210 from 16 September through December. Opening days and outdoor activities also change with the season, so the lower price is not a promise of the same daily programme.
Choose your bus or drive around the actual visiting hours and leave time for the museum grounds if conditions suit. If you are staying in Svolvær or the western villages, it is still an outing that needs travel. Avoid placing it between two distant, fixed-time activities.
Leave space for weather and ordinary village time
Choose a walk for the conditions and your experience, not for the most dramatic photograph. Wet rock, wind and limited daylight can change what is sensible. If a mountain outing does not fit, spend time near the harbour, take a shorter coastal walk or use an indoor visit instead.
Bring groceries that work with your accommodation and next few meals. Check the branch opening hours before moving west or arriving late, and keep a simple meal available if the road day takes longer. Use marked parking and respect homes, working quays and local camping restrictions. A quiet day close to the room can be one of the most useful parts of a longer island stay.

Svolvær is useful for an eastern base and some organised departures. Leknes suits central-island access, while a western village stay gives you a different setting with fewer nearby services. A rorbu is an accommodation type, not a promise of a private waterside cabin.

Reis Nordland’s route 300 follows the main corridor through Svolvær and Leknes towards Å. Local branches and return times need separate checking. Compare Evenes, Svolvær and Leknes arrivals by the whole onward journey.
Airport transfers
Evenes is a mainland gateway to Lofoten. Compare the year-round Boreal coach to Svolvær with the public route 300 connection for your flight and village. Choose the full onward journey to your accommodation, not just a ticket labelled Lofoten. The operators have separate booking arrangements.
Svolvær Airport is separate from Evenes and Leknes. Arrange a transfer to your actual accommodation or check a dated public-bus connection including the walk to its stop. Confirm the full price and pickup with the provider; a flight arrival does not guarantee an onward bus to a remote cabin.
Use Leknes only if its flight and onward journey suit your part of Lofoten. Confirm your accommodation address, pickup and complete transfer price before arrival. A booking into Svolvær or Evenes has different onward arrangements.

A working kitchen can help during a multi-night stay. Buy food around your next few meals, and check shop opening times before moving to a smaller village. Budget for a meal out without assuming every cabin comes with cooking equipment.
Worth Paying For
Lofotr at Borg gives context to the islands beyond the viewpoints. Its ordinary adult ticket is NOK 265 in the main summer period and NOK 210 from 16 September through December; check the seasonal programme as well as admission.
Skip / Save Your Money
Enjoy a harbour or coastal walk close to your base when the weather suits it. You do not need a summit or a boat tour every day, and neither should be treated as a guaranteed wildlife experience.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Do not choose a remote room before checking how you will reach it after the last bus. A roadside photograph does not make a stopping place legal or safe, and a marked mountain trail can still be demanding.
