Choose a region before choosing the tickets
For a first rail trip, Oslo, Bergen and Flåm make a connected route. They offer different days: a waterfront and museum visit, a working harbour, then a smaller fjord base. The Oslo–Bergen train takes about seven hours. Treat it as part of the holiday rather than a transfer to fit between two busy sightseeing plans.
Trondheim gives you a different rail direction, with the cathedral and Bakklandet beside the river. Stavanger suits an old-town stay and a separate Lysefjord outing. Ålesund is useful for architecture and coastal scenery, but has no railway station: a rail arrival needs an onward bus from Åndalsnes.
Farther north, Tromsø and Lofoten are separate bases. A map can make them look like easy neighbours. A bus journey between them needs connections and a full travel day, while flights and seasonal tourist services have their own schedules. Pick the north for its landscapes and seasons, not as a quick addition to a short Bergen trip.
Buy the right kind of transport ticket
Use Entur to look across operators, then check the selected ticket's conditions. Vy serves the Bergen line, SJ NORD serves Oslo–Trondheim, and Go-Ahead runs the Sørland line towards Stavanger. Some departures are cheaper when booked early, but there is no single advance fare or booking window that applies to every train.
Local tickets are separate decisions. Oslo's Ruter, Bergen's Skyss, Trondheim's AtB and Tromsø's Svipper have different zones, passes and airport arrangements. In Bergen, light rail line 1 uses the ordinary local ticket; the express airport coach does not. In Trondheim, a valid zone A ticket can cover the airport train. Around Oslo, compare the Vy train with Flytoget rather than assuming their tickets are interchangeable.
Check the station, airport or quay name before paying. Oslo Gardermoen and Torp are different airports. In Lofoten, Evenes, Svolvær and Leknes lead to different onward journeys. A cheaper flight can leave you with a longer transfer or an extra night's accommodation.
Build the budget from your own bookings
Norwegian fares and admissions on these pages are shown in NOK. The euro tables are chosen spending examples that you can adjust, not a promise of current hotel availability or an exchange-rate conversion. Replace the room allowance with the full price for your dates and party. Count a whole room once when sharing it.
Add intercity travel, airport transfers and any car costs separately. If you choose a museum ticket or excursion, replace the example activity allowance with its actual cost. Do not add both for the same visit. Breakfast included in a room can be useful, but only if it suits your departure time. A kitchen helps most when you will stay long enough to use the groceries you buy.
For the seven-day fjord rail trip, choose the trains and fjord activity before committing to non-refundable rooms. Flåm has a smaller accommodation choice than Bergen. A room with a good connection can be more useful than one that is cheaper but leaves you dependent on an unavailable bus.
Let the conditions shape the outdoor day
Keep a clear-weather opening for mountain views and a museum or neighbourhood walk for a wetter day. Summer daylight does not make every mountain path suitable for every visitor. Check the trail, forecast and transport back before setting off. Winter and shoulder-season trips need a different plan from a summer photograph.
Norway's right to roam comes with conditions. Tent camping on uncultivated land normally means staying at least 150 metres from an inhabited house or cabin, and normally no more than two nights in the same place without permission. More remote areas have different rules, and local restrictions still apply. This does not give a campervan permission to park anywhere. Follow signs, fire restrictions and waste arrangements rather than treating an outdoor stay as automatically free and unrestricted.

Book the journey you will actually take, then compare flexible and restricted train fares. Match local passes to your number of rides. Flagship Destinations & Major Bases
Bergen makes a good base for harbour walks, a mountain viewpoint and a fjord journey. Give the city a day of its own before heading to Flåm, and keep the hill visit flexible enough to use a clear spell.
Tromsø works well as a base for a few carefully chosen outings, with town time between them. Winter darkness and summer light create very different trips. Keep one day flexible and choose activities for the conditions you are comfortable with.
Trondheim suits a few days of riverside streets, the cathedral and unhurried meals. Keep the historic centre together on foot, then use a separate afternoon for an outing beyond it.
Regional Cities, Coastlines & Countryside
Stavanger gives you a compact harbour city and access to the Lysefjord area. Keep a town day separate from a hike or cruise, so a weather change does not leave the whole visit depending on one excursion.
Ålesund suits a town walk, time with its architecture and a separate coastal or fjord outing. Stay near the centre for a short visit, then choose one longer excursion that fits the season and the connections.
Flåm is a useful overnight stop between a mountain railway and a fjord journey. Choose where you will sleep before booking the boat, and give the village a quiet evening after the busiest arrivals have passed.
Lofoten needs a choice of base before it needs a long list of sights. Svolvær, Leknes and the western villages suit different journeys. Stay a few nights, choose a manageable area and leave room for weather to change the order.
