Give the railway a full travel day
Vy runs the direct train from Oslo S to Bergen station. The advertised journey is about seven hours, with the exact time depending on the departure and any works. The line climbs out of eastern Norway, crosses the mountain plateau and descends towards the west coast. Keep the afternoon flexible rather than booking a timed attraction immediately after arrival.
Choose a daytime departure if the views are a main reason for taking the train. Daylight changes a great deal across the year. A departure that gives a long evening view in summer can run through darkness in winter. Bring something to read as well as a camera, and take food if you want a predictable meal budget.
Compare the fare and its conditions together
Search your date in Vy or Entur. Restricted fares can be good value, but compare change and refund rules before deciding. There is no dependable NOK 299 or fixed euro fare available on every departure. Add any seat or accommodation choice shown in the booking before comparing totals.
A flight is much shorter in the air, but the useful comparison includes travel to Oslo's airport, check-in, luggage collection and the Bergen transfer. Bergen light rail line 1 takes around 45 minutes to Byparken; the airport coach uses different tickets and stops. The train arrives near the city centre without either airport journey.
Flåm needs a change, not an extra stop in Bergen
The main line goes through Myrdal. Flåm is reached on the separate Flåm Railway from there. If you want to break the journey in Flåm, search that itinerary before buying a simple Oslo–Bergen ticket. A restricted through fare does not automatically let you stop for a night and continue later.
