Stavanger gives you a compact harbour city and access to the Lysefjord area. Keep a town day separate from a hike or cruise, so a weather change does not leave the whole visit depending on one excursion.

Give the city its own day
Start with a walk around Vågen and the old streets, then choose somewhere for lunch. Gamle Stavanger is a residential area as well as a place visitors come to see. Keep to public streets and respect doorways, gardens and people living there. The waterfront and town centre can fill a gentle afternoon without a boat reservation.
The Norwegian Petroleum Museum at Kjeringholmen is a useful indoor choice when rain changes your plans. Ordinary adult admission is NOK 180. Choose it for the story of Norway’s offshore industry and the exhibits, rather than simply to escape the rain for ten minutes. Check the opening time before arriving with luggage or fitting it immediately before a train.
Choose a hike or a fjord day
Preikestolen needs an outing of its own. The return trail is about eight kilometres, with an official planning time of roughly four hours for the walk, before transport, breaks and any wait at the viewpoint. Terrain, weather and your pace can make it longer. Pack food, water and layers and make sure the return transport leaves a realistic margin.
Look at the trail operator’s current advice before choosing the day. Winter is a different undertaking from a summer walk, and a cheap ticket to the trailhead does not provide guiding or equipment. A Lysefjord cruise is another way to spend time in the landscape, but it does not automatically include the climb to Preikestolen. Compare what each booking actually contains.
If conditions are unsuitable, keep a town day and move the outing if possible. Avoid booking an inflexible flight immediately after a mountain excursion. Having a quieter alternative makes the trip easier to enjoy when the weather refuses to follow the plan.
Match the airport service to your address
Avinor lists the dedicated airport bus to Stavanger at roughly 20–30 minutes. Check its city stop against your room and include the final walk. Kolumbus route 42 instead links the airport with places including Sola and Sandnes. It can form part of a lower-cost public-transport journey, but it is not a direct bus to the central harbour. Search the whole trip and compare the change before paying.
For local travel, use Kolumbus’s ticket and journey information for the zones you need. Keep the airport coach separate from ordinary local-ticket assumptions. A room close to the station or centre can reduce the number of rides needed during a short visit.
Continue along the coast or take the train
The Bergen–Stavanger coach includes its two ferry crossings in the through journey. Compare the express and regular departures, since their travel times differ. Do not buy separate ferry tickets for a crossing already included in that coach booking.
For Oslo, the Sørlandet railway is a full travel day. Bring what you need for the journey and leave a simple evening on arrival. Spend more nights in one base if adding another city would leave too little time for the coast itself.
