Flåm & Aurland Travel Guide
Flåm is a useful overnight stop between a mountain railway and a fjord journey. Choose where you will sleep before booking the boat, and give the village a quiet evening after the busiest arrivals have passed.

Sleep where the next journey starts
Flåm is small, but a room described as being in the Aurland area can be well beyond the station. For one night between trains and a cruise, check the walking route from Flåm station to the actual address. If you choose Aurland, arrange the extra transfer rather than assuming the train will stop there.
Leave your bags before setting out. A short village walk and the free Flåm Railway Museum make a useful arrival afternoon if the main train journey has already filled much of the day. Check the museum’s opening time; free admission does not mean the building stays open all evening.
Change at Myrdal for the railway
The Oslo–Bergen line runs through Myrdal, where you change for Flåm. It does not run through Flåm itself. Search the full Bergen–Flåm journey or Oslo–Flåm journey and look carefully at the transfer before selecting a departure.
Take layers and something to eat before leaving the larger town. Myrdal is an interchange, so a short connection should not depend on buying a full lunch there. Keep your bag easy to lift and leave the aisle clear while other passengers board. Pick daylight travel if the scenery is a main reason for the trip.
The railway fare varies by travel date and ticket choice. Compare the complete fare with any package you are considering, including its change and cancellation terms. A package can simplify the booking, but check that it leaves you in the right place for the night.
Make the cruise a complete journey
The Nærøyfjord cruise between Flåm and Gudvangen takes about two hours one way. From Flåm it travels through Aurlandsfjord before entering Nærøyfjord. Choose the direction that fits your wider route; the two endpoints are not interchangeable.
For an outing returning to Flåm, check Norway’s best shuttle from Gudvangen and reserve the combination that fits your cruise. A boat ticket by itself does not include every onward bus. Leave time to disembark and reach the correct boarding place. For our seven-day Norway itinerary, the cruise is planned around a Flåm overnight and a clear return journey to Bergen.
If the boat time would make the day rushed, keep the railway and village visit and choose the cruise for another day. It is better to enjoy one substantial journey than spend the whole visit watching the clock between reservations.
Budget for the actual night and outings
Ask what the room price includes, especially breakfast, linen and access to a kitchen. A self-catering stay helps only if you can buy and prepare food without adding a long detour. Bring what you need for a simple train lunch and leave room in the budget for one meal you want to enjoy in the village.
Keep the room, railway and boat amounts separate when comparing options. Replace the sightseeing allowance with the tickets you choose; do not add a package price again if its train or cruise is already counted. Keep weather-sensitive extras flexible around your fixed onward train.

Stay close to Flåm station and the quay for a short visit by public transport. Aurland can be another base, but it is a different village with an extra transfer. Check that transfer before choosing a room by its fjord view.

Trains reach Flåm through Myrdal. The Nærøyfjord cruise links Flåm and Gudvangen, with a separately booked shuttle available for returning by road. Aurland and Stegastein outings need their own transport plan.
🥖 Eating for Less
Check your room’s breakfast and kitchen arrangements before buying groceries. Carry a simple lunch for the rail journey so that a short interchange at Myrdal is not also your only meal stop.
Worth Paying For
Choose the Flåm Railway for the mountain descent or the Nærøyfjord cruise for time on the water. Price the exact departure and direction; a package is useful only if you want its included journeys.
Skip / Save Your Money
The Flåm Railway Museum has free entry. Leave time for the village and waterfront instead of adding another transfer solely to fill a spare hour.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A one-way fjord cruise finishes at a different place. Check whether the return shuttle is included in the booking and whether your room is in Flåm, Aurland or another village.
