- May, June and September are useful months for walking, though weekends and events still affect room prices. In rain, swap a hill walk for an indoor visit and keep the river for a clearer spell.
A first day that stays in the city
Start at Prešeren Square, cross the Triple Bridge and walk to the Central Market. Follow the river past the covered colonnade before turning into the old streets. Have lunch before going uphill: it is easier to enjoy the castle when you are not watching the clock for your next meal.

Choose how much castle you want
The standard adult castle admission is €15, or €19 with the funicular. That is a useful €4 comparison if you were already planning to visit the exhibitions and tower. Leave the later afternoon for the river or Tivoli Park. A day trip to Bled is a separate full outing, especially if you want the castle or Vintgar as well as the lakeshore.
Bus payments in practice
For one direct city bus, tapping a bank card is straightforward. If your journey involves a change, Urbana's 90-minute transfer window can be more useful. A physical Urbana card costs €2 before you add travel credit. Validate when you board; keep the card handy for the next bus. City transport explanation.
Airport buses and trips to other Slovenian towns use separate tickets. Leave time to locate the correct departure stop around the station construction area, and save your accommodation address before arriving.
Where to Stay
The centre is convenient for evening walks. A room near the bus and railway stations can make an early departure easier, but confirm walking access during the station works. Check whether an old-town room involves stairs or restricted car access.
Getting Around
Walk between the river, market and old town. For longer trips, a city-zone bus ride costs €1.50. Urbana allows transfers within 90 minutes; paying directly with Visa or Mastercard does not include those free transfers.

Price for your journeyChoose an Arriva departure from Brnik Airport to Ljubljana bus station. The reviewed 15 October 2026 departure at 09:00 arrives at 09:30; some services take longer, including a 53-minute early journey. Add waiting and traffic. Arriva allows cash or card at the driver on this airport route and lists a ticket machine at the airport stop. Price for your journeyNomago advertises airport pickup near the Terminal B arrivals exit, with Ljubljana bus-station or selected address drop-off. Its home-address option needs booking at least 24 hours ahead. GoOpti shared transfers use a chosen time window and notify the exact departure time the day before. Check the airport, pickup, destination, luggage, delay and cancellation terms for the provider and product you book. Worth Paying For
The castle museum and tower if you want more than the view; the funicular if it makes the climb manageable. Choose an indoor visit around your interests rather than buying every available add-on.

A city transport card for a stay spent entirely on foot. You can enjoy the river, bridges and market area without a paid tour or a castle admission.
