Segovia Travel Guide

Segovia is much more than a stop beside the aqueduct. Walk uphill through the old town towards the cathedral and Alcázar, leave time for lunch, and choose a return connection that lets you enjoy the afternoon without hurrying back across the city.

Example spending plans

Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.

These are separate spending choices, not price or quality rankings. The alternative plan may have a lower total when its room, meal or activity allowances differ.

Follow the old town from the aqueduct

The aqueduct is an easy place to begin, but leave enough time to go farther. Walk up through the old streets towards Plaza Mayor and the cathedral, then continue towards the Alcázar. Stop for lunch or a drink along the way rather than saving everything for the end of the route.

This is a gradual uphill walk with uneven surfaces in places. A visit that looks short on a map can take much longer once you add photographs, a meal and an indoor stop. With one day, choose the cathedral or palace as your main visit and keep the other optional.

Count the station transfer

The high-speed railway uses Segovia-Guiomar, outside the historic centre. Look up the local connection to the aqueduct area before you leave Madrid, and check the return service as well. Getting to the city is more than the time shown beside the train.

A coach from Madrid is another option to compare, especially if its departure point suits your accommodation. Compare the whole journey from your room to the old town, not just the fastest part. Keep enough time to return to the correct station when leaving.

Choose the palace and tower separately

The Alcázar's official visitor information explains the palace and museum visit and the Tower of Juan II. The tower has 152 spiral steps and is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. Check whether your ticket includes it before planning the climb.

A limited Tuesday afternoon free period covers the palace and museum for qualifying EU citizens, with tickets obtained individually at the counter and subject to capacity. It does not apply to every visitor or include every part of the castle. A normal advance ticket is a more dependable choice if the visit is central to a short trip.

Leave space for lunch

Cochinillo can be a memorable main meal, but read how it is priced. Ask what comes with a portion and whether a shared order suits your group. A smaller lunch or a set menu is equally reasonable if you would rather spend more on the visits.

Do not book a long meal immediately before the return transfer. A relaxed lunch works best when there is still room to walk afterwards, collect a bag if needed and get back to the station without checking the clock constantly.

Stay overnight for a different pace

An overnight stay lets you see the centre after many day visitors have gone and choose a second visit the next morning. Ask about heating in colder months and about carrying luggage through the old streets. If arriving by car, arrange parking before driving into the historic area.

The budget below now offers starting allowances for a stay in Segovia. For a day trip, keep your Madrid accommodation in your trip total and add only the return journey, food and visits here. You are not paying for a second hotel night just because you visit another city.

Where to Stay

Stay near the old centre if you want an evening walk after the day trips leave. Check steps, parking arrangements and luggage access before choosing a room deep inside the historic streets.

Getting Around

High-speed trains arrive at Segovia-Guiomar, outside the centre. Add the local bus or taxi connection to the aqueduct area; the fast railway time is only part of the journey from Madrid.

Eating for Less

A roast lunch can be the main meal of the day. Ask whether cochinillo is priced by the portion, person or shared order, then compare it with a set menu before deciding.

Worth Paying For

The palace visit is a good choice if you want to go beyond the castle's exterior. Add the tower only if its 152-step spiral staircase suits everyone in your group.

Skip / Save Your Money

Skip a combined guided day trip if you mainly want an independent walk and one indoor visit. Keep enough money and time for the transfer between Guiomar station and the centre.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes

The Alcázar palace and museum ticket is different from the option including the Tower of Juan II. Check the named product and its time before paying.
