Malmö Travel Guide
Malmö is a useful first stop in Sweden from Copenhagen, with an old centre, lively food streets and a waterfront that feels quite different from both. Give it two days if you want to enjoy the city rather than just change trains.
At A Glance
Split the old centre and the coast
Start around Stortorget and Lilla Torg, then head towards the castle and parks. Leave time for lunch instead of making the morning a race between landmarks. On a second day, choose the Western Harbour for a waterside walk and Möllevången for food. Wind can make the seafront feel much colder than the sheltered streets.
If your main interest is the university town nearby, make Lund a separate half or full day. You do not need to move hotels simply to see both places.
Choose the right museum ticket
Malmö Museum sells a SEK 100 adult combined ticket for its two museum houses, or SEK 60 for one. Visitors aged 0–19 enter free. A Wisdome screening needs a booked time and a different ticket, so check before joining an ordinary entry queue.
The art museum has a temporary free location in Kungsparken while lift work affects its usual castle galleries. Read the current visitor notice when planning an art-focused day. Normal museum opening hours also make Monday a day to check carefully.
Compare two very different airports
Copenhagen Airport connects to Malmö by train across the bridge. It is a different airport from Malmö Airport, so look at the code on your flight booking: CPH or MMX.
From Malmö Airport, Flygbussarna runs to Malmö C. There is also a Skånetrafiken bus connection through Svedala station with a train onward. Compare the full connection, particularly after a late flight; the coach and local network use different tickets.
Keep the next stop easy
The Copenhagen journey works for a day trip or an onward move. Stay in Malmö for the night if you want dinner without watching the clock. For a longer Swedish trip, continue towards Helsingborg or Gothenburg. Buy the ticket for that journey rather than assuming your Malmö bus ticket reaches it.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one bed. These are chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace the stay and visits with your bookings. Add intercity travel, airport journeys and excursions separately. Local prices are in SEK.

SEK 100.00🛏️ Where to Stay
Stay near Malmö C for arrivals and early trains, or near Triangeln if Möllevången and evening meals are the main attraction. Compare the walk from the actual station exit, especially with a heavy bag.
🚇 Getting Around
Use Skånetrafiken for local buses and regional trains. A small-zone adult single is SEK 32, but a journey to Lund or Denmark needs its own ticket area. Search the complete journey before paying.
Airport transfers
Flygbussarna runs to Malmö C; allow roughly 40–50 minutes for the ride and check the dated timetable. The Skånetrafiken alternative uses a bus to Svedala station and a train onward, with a different ticket.
🥖 Eating for Less
Möllevången is a good area to compare menus, including falafel and other takeaway meals. Pick by serving size and what you want to eat; a busy food neighbourhood does not make every restaurant cheap.
Worth Paying For
Malmö Museum's adult combined ticket costs SEK 100 for its two museum houses. The Wisdome film has a separate timed product. Choose that only if the screening interests you.
Skip / Save Your Money
Keep the coast walk, parks and old centre in the plan without adding paid attractions to fill every hour. You can enjoy the Western Harbour without paying to visit a particular building.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Check which museum building your ticket covers. The castle's usual art museum galleries are affected by lift work; a general museum ticket is not a promise that every gallery is open.
