Use Selçuk as the practical base for Ephesus
Selçuk gives easier access to the archaeological site than a same-day rush from a distant city. Stay near the centre or railway station if arriving by train, but check how luggage will reach the room. The Ephesus entrances remain outside town, so plan the minibus, taxi or arranged transfer to the correct gate.
Give the site several hours and check current opening, ticket and restoration information through the official museum service. Heat, shade and uneven stone affect the pace. Starting early can make the visit more comfortable, but only if the chosen gate and transport are confirmed.
Leave time for Selçuk itself
The museum, basilica area and town streets can fill the remainder of a day. Do not combine every nearby place with Ephesus merely because the distances look small. Şirince, a beach or another archaeological site requires its own return plan.
Connect the onward route honestly
Regional rail is useful from İzmir and towards Denizli when the timetable fits. For Pamukkale, the train reaches Denizli, not the travertines. Add the local transfer and luggage handling. A late Denizli arrival can make the site visit impractical, so consider staying in Selçuk or Pamukkale rather than forcing both in one day.
Add Ephesus admission, the gate transfer and onward rail separately to the town budget.

Getting Around
Walk central Selçuk, then use a current minibus, taxi or arranged transfer to the chosen Ephesus gate. Confirm the return and do not assume a vehicle waits at the gate where you finish.
Eating for Less
Use bakeries and lokantas in town before or after the site. Carry water, but follow site rules and do not rely on refreshment points being open throughout the ruins.
Worth Paying For
Ephesus deserves enough time for the main route. Add the Terrace Houses only when the separate ticket, steps and extra time match your interests.
Skip / Save Your Money
The Temple of Artemis area, Isa Bey Mosque and a walk around central Selçuk can complement the paid site without another expensive tour.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Ignore claims that a special ticket or taxi is the only way to enter. Read the official ticket name, gate and current access, and agree a taxi price or meter before moving.
