Choose the visit before choosing a ticket
Vatican City has two main visitor plans: St Peter's Basilica and Square, or the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. They have separate entrances, booking arrangements and security checks. Treating them as one attraction is an easy way to buy the wrong ticket or arrive at the wrong queue.

Use your Rome base
Stay in Rome and plan the journey to the correct entrance. From Termini, Metro A to Ottaviano followed by a walk is a useful option. A standard ATAC BIT costs €1.50 and lasts 100 minutes, with one metro journey. Check ATAC's ticket conditions and add security time after arrival.
The Rome–Vatican route distinguishes St Peter's Square from the Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano. Your booking's meeting point matters more than a generic Vatican map pin.
Pay for the right thing
Ordinary entry to St Peter's Basilica is free. Optional booking services, audio guides, guided visits and the dome can carry charges. The official Basilica information explains that distinction. A paid product does not remove security checks.
The standard Vatican Museums ticket is €20, plus €5 for an official online reservation. The Sistine Chapel is part of the Museums visit. Book through the official Museums ticket service and read the admission conditions before paying.
Leave room between visits
The Museums can take a substantial part of the day. Allow time to leave, eat and walk around the outside to St Peter's if doing both. Do not rely on an independent-visitor shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to the Basilica. For a slower trip, place them on separate Rome days.
The five-day Rome plan keeps one accommodation base. Budget cards here use Rome accommodation and chosen personal allowances; they do not describe hotels inside Vatican City. Count the same room only once.
Dress for a place of worship, pack lightly and check the day's religious events and access notices. An attraction reservation is separate from the travel documents needed for your wider journey through Italy.
Where to look for better value
All overnight examples use Rome accommodation. Compare the actual entrance and journey rather than assuming a nearby street is always cheaper.
