Travel money: fees, deposits and daily spending
Separate what you will spend from money that may be held temporarily. A room deposit can affect the balance available on your card even when it is not part of the final holiday cost.
Before you pay
Check your card’s foreign-transaction and cash-withdrawal charges. If a terminal or cash machine offers currency conversion, read the rate and fee before accepting. Keep a backup way to pay and know how to contact your bank.
Compare accommodation totals
Use the full amount for the stay, including mandatory charges shown in the booking. Read the deposit conditions, cancellation deadline and late-arrival instructions. A lower room rate is not useful if it comes with conditions your trip cannot meet.
Budget around real choices
Enter your actual room quote, the meals you expect to buy and the journeys you plan to take. Keep airport and intercity travel visible. When sharing a room, split that room cost once; do not divide individual attraction or transport tickets.
