A short train ride with an easy arrival

Haarlem is about 20 km from Amsterdam. A suitable direct train from Amsterdam Centraal to Haarlem takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Check the NS planner for your date, especially at weekends when engineering works can alter the service. The time on the train is only part of the trip, so add your journey to Centraal and the walk at the other end.

Search for Haarlem station. Haarlem Spaarnwoude is a different stop and is less convenient for a first walk around the old centre. From Haarlem station, head towards Grote Markt, allowing roughly 15 minutes on foot and longer if you stop along the way.

Tickets and the return journey

Ordinary domestic trains do not need a reserved seat. Use an appropriate ticket or check in with an accepted bank card, then check out at Haarlem with the same card or device. Each traveller needs their own payment method. The fare shown in the route comparison is an earlier planning estimate; the planner gives the price for your actual journey and any discount eligibility.

A GVB city ticket for Amsterdam does not cover this NS train. If you already have a regional travel pass, read its coverage before buying another ticket. Keep the last useful return train in mind if dinner is part of your Haarlem visit, rather than assuming daytime frequency continues all night.

Make it a full day

Start with the square and church, have lunch, then follow the Spaarne towards the windmill. Check opening times before arranging a museum or guided visit. The Haarlem city guide explains the church and windmill choices, including the current repair notice.

For a longer trip, continue to Utrecht instead of returning to Amsterdam. That next journey is separate and can involve a change; see the six-day rail plan. For payment details, use our OVpay guide.
