Approximate direct distance: 505 km • Travel distance depends on the route and transport you choose.

Before choosing a ticket

Renfe lists AVE journeys from Barcelona Sants to Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes. Check the stations on your selected departure and the conditions of its fare. Choosing your journey

A direct high-speed train is a useful first choice for travelling from Barcelona Sants to Madrid. Plan roughly 2½–3½ hours on the train and leave time for the arrival station.

Compare the departure you can comfortably reach

OUIGO’s route information and the Renfe and iryo planners let you compare the corridor. Check that the Madrid station matches your onward plan and read the total fare after luggage and seat choices.

Allow time at Sants

Follow your operator’s arrival and boarding instructions. Baggage screening and platform access take variable time, so an old claim that they always take five to ten minutes is not a useful margin. Keep identification and your ticket easy to reach.

Keep the next connection realistic

Atocha and Chamartín are different stations. If your next train uses the other one, include the transfer and a comfortable connection margin. A separately booked flight also needs local travel and airport time; the high-speed arrival alone is not the flight connection time.

Plan the arrival

The Barcelona guide and Madrid guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
