Choosing your journey

A direct high-speed train is a practical first choice between the city centres. Allow about 3–3¾ hours on a suitable direct AVE departure, then add station access and the journey to your room. Other operators and departures can differ.

Compare the same journey

Search Madrid Puerta de Atocha–Almudena Grandes to Barcelona Sants. Compare Renfe, iryo and OUIGO for the date you need. Avlo is a Renfe service, not a fourth independent railway company. The fastest train and the lowest total price may be different departures.

Read the extras before choosing

Check luggage size, seat selection, changes and refunds. A low headline fare can cost more once you add the bag you intend to bring. A Combinado Cercanías benefit applies only when included in the actual ticket; Avlo does not include it. Do not buy local tickets twice, but do not assume every high-speed fare covers them.

Leave room for the stations

Arrive early enough for the operator’s boarding process and baggage screening. A five-minute queue on someone else’s trip does not establish your arrival margin. At Sants, take time to find the correct metro or street exit before setting a tight dinner or museum appointment.

Plan the arrival

The Madrid guide and Barcelona guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
