Plan about 6¾ hours on the reviewed direct Alvia from Barcelona Sants to San Sebastián-Donostia. This is the main-line station, not Euskotren Amara. Check the dated departure and include the final local journey. |
Choosing your journey
A suitable direct Alvia train makes this a full travel day with a central arrival. Allow roughly 5½–7 hours according to the departure and keep the evening flexible.

Choose the main-line station
Renfe’s Barcelona–San Sebastián route starts at Barcelona Sants. The main-line arrival in Donostia/San Sebastián is different from Euskotren’s Amara station. Check the final walk to your accommodation before arranging an early dinner reservation.
Give the long journey enough space
Take food, water and something comfortable for several hours on board. Check the actual departure’s luggage and catering information. A direct train avoids changes, but does not turn a cross-country journey into a short outing between sightseeing stops.
Compare flights using the airport code
If you prefer to fly, compare the full transfer at both ends. San Sebastián Airport and Bilbao Airport have different onward journeys. An attractive flight price can be less useful if the arrival misses the last convenient coach to your room.
Plan the arrival
The Barcelona guide and San Sebastián guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
