San Sebastián Travel Guide
San Sebastián is a place to leave room between meals and walks. The bay, old town and Gros give a short stay plenty of variety, while the hills and nearby coast are better enjoyed when you have time to follow the weather.

Leave a little space around the bay
A walk along La Concha is a good first plan because it does not need a precise start time. Stop when you feel like it, then decide whether to continue towards the far end of the bay or turn back for lunch. Gros and Zurriola make a different part of the day, across the river from the old town.
Treat beach conditions separately from the forecast for a pleasant walk. Follow the flags and local advice before swimming. If the sea or weather changes, the city still offers enough for an afternoon without making a beach visit the test of whether the trip worked.
Choose your room for the evenings too
Parte Vieja is convenient for eating out, but check reviews for the actual room's noise. Gros can suit a stay centred on Zurriola, while the central streets are useful for walking between areas. Compare the final price and cancellation terms for your dates rather than relying on a general claim that one neighbourhood is always cheaper.
If you want quieter sleep, ask whether the room faces the street or an inner courtyard. A good location on a map cannot tell you how the room feels after midnight.
Make pintxo stops about the food
Start with one or two items and ask about dishes prepared to order. Read the menu price, especially for larger plates, and tell the staff about any dietary needs before choosing from the counter. Pintxos often contain more ingredients than are obvious at first glance.
You can have a drink without turning every stop into another alcoholic round. If you prefer to sit down and eat a full meal, do that. Comparing both options helps keep the evening comfortable for your appetite and budget.
Check the airport and station names
The tourism board's arrival guide distinguishes San Sebastián Airport, near Hondarribia, from Bilbao Airport farther away. Bilbao has a direct coach connection to San Sebastián, which can be useful when your flight choice is better there. Compare its departure times with the flight before booking.
The main Renfe station and Euskotren's Amara station are different places. Check the name on your journey plan and leave time for the walk to your accommodation. A regional railway ride is not the same service as a long-distance train to Madrid or Barcelona.
Add another place only if the journey fits
Bilbao deserves its own time for the Guggenheim and old town. If you only have two nights in San Sebastián, a second city can take most of your spare day. With a longer stay, compare a nearby coastal outing with a full Bilbao visit and choose according to your interests and the return connection.
Where to Stay
Compare Gros for access to Zurriola and local streets, the centre for level walks, or Parte Vieja for evenings close to pintxo bars. A room above a busy street may matter more than a small price difference.
Getting Around
The central areas connect well on foot. Check the airport code when booking flights: San Sebastián Airport and Bilbao Airport have different transfers, even when both are offered for the same trip.
Eating for Less
Choose a few pintxos from a priced menu and ask which hot dishes are available. A series of small orders can be an enjoyable dinner, but it is not automatically cheaper than a set meal.
Worth Paying For
A food tour can be worthwhile if you want someone to explain dishes and bar customs. Check the group size, included food and drinks, and dietary arrangements before choosing one.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a rushed multi-town day if the weather gives you a good afternoon by the bay. Walking the promenade and sitting on the beach do not require a paid activity.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Compare accommodation for your exact dates, including festival and event periods. A shoulder-season month does not guarantee a quiet city or low room prices.
