Planning for the weather in northern Spain
Expect a different trip on the Atlantic coast than inland, and keep beaches, city visits and mountain walks flexible.
Northern Spain can be a good choice if you prefer an Atlantic coast trip to a very hot inland summer itinerary. It still gets rain, warm spells and unsettled days. Choose places with things you want to do in more than one kind of weather.
Coast and inland are different
Bilbao, San Sebastián and Santander face Atlantic influences, while places farther inland can have a different temperature range. AEMET's Bilbao climate table is useful for long-term context, but a station average cannot tell you whether your beach afternoon will be dry.
Look at the forecast for the actual town, not simply “northern Spain”. If you add a mountain walk, use the relevant mountain information and route conditions too. A comfortable coastal morning does not confirm good visibility or safe footing higher up.
Build a trip that works in rain
Pair a city walk with an indoor attraction or a long lunch. In Bilbao, a museum visit can take the main part of a wet day, while the river walk can wait for a better window. In a beach town, choose accommodation near useful restaurants and transport so you are not dependent on sunshine all week.
Pack a waterproof layer and shoes that handle wet streets. Leave the heaviest walking for a day with suitable conditions rather than following a fixed order regardless of the forecast.
Summer still needs ordinary care
Northern beaches can be popular during school holidays and local festivals. Book a practical base and check parking or public transport if visiting a busy coastal area. Cooler average weather does not mean you can ignore sun exposure or the sea's flags and currents.

Keep the indoor choice specific
For Bilbao, decide whether the current Guggenheim exhibitions interest you before buying admission. For San Sebastián, leave the bayfront walk movable and choose a meal or indoor visit nearby if rain arrives.
