Choosing your journey
A direct coach is the quicker option between the cities. Euskotren’s E1 train is useful if you want a slower local journey and its stops suit your plans.

Use the main coach stations
Allow roughly 1¼–1½ hours on a suitable direct coach between Bilbao Intermodal and Donostia’s main bus station. Use Alsa’s route to compare departures for your day. Different operators have different tickets; do not assume a city pass covers the intercity ride.
Choose E1 deliberately
Euskotren E1 runs between Bilbao Matiko and Donostia Amara. Allow roughly 2½–3 hours for the through local train. This is not the main-line Renfe station at either end. Use the current timetable, especially after the September seasonal change.
A day trip needs a return plan
If keeping your Bilbao room, take a light bag and choose a return that leaves time for a meal. If moving to San Sebastián, check the walk from the arrival station to your room. A beach visit, old-town walk and several sit-down food stops will fill the day without adding a distant excursion.
Plan the arrival
The Bilbao guide and San Sebastián guide explain the local journeys, places to stay and visits. Add the main travel ticket separately to your daily spending plan. The distance above is a straight-line comparison between the city centres; your train, road or flight route can be longer.
