Bilbao is a good city for combining one substantial museum visit with time outside. Follow the river between the Guggenheim area and the old town, leave space for a meal, and add a hilltop or coastal outing only if you have another day.

Give the museum a proper place in the day
If the Guggenheim is your main reason for coming, choose its ticket before adding other bookings. Check the exhibitions as well as the building: they help you decide how much time you want inside. The museum's admission page currently shows €18 for adults, with prices able to change by exhibition period.
Opening on Mondays depends on the season and date. Check your day instead of assuming every Monday is closed or every summer Monday is open. Leave lunch flexible so an interesting gallery does not become something you have to rush through.
Use the river to join the day together
The riverside makes a clear route between the museum area and Casco Viejo. Break the walk with a drink or a place to sit, and choose the bank or crossing that suits the next stop. In rain, swap a long outdoor afternoon for an indoor visit rather than trying to keep the same schedule.
Artxanda can give the trip a different view of the city, but it needs its own outward and return journey. Check visibility before going up. A cloudy day may be better spent around the old town than paying for a view you will barely see.
Count the card cost as well as the fare
An anonymous Barik card costs €3 and needs a minimum €5 top-up. The card price is separate from the money available for journeys. It can be shared by up to ten people travelling together, using the required validation for each person.
For one or two rides, compare that initial outlay with individual tickets. For a longer stay with metro, tram or other covered journeys, the card may be more useful. Follow the validation rules of the service you board, including exit validation where required.
Enjoy pintxos without losing track of the bill
Pick a few things you actually want to try. Ask about hot dishes as well as food on the counter, and check the price before ordering an unfamiliar item. Moving between bars can be part of the evening, but a drink at every stop is optional.
If you want a full meal, compare a restaurant menu with the likely cost of several rounds of small plates. Neither choice is the correct way to eat; they simply make different evenings.
Choose the next connection carefully
For San Sebastián, compare the coach with the slower local railway journey and choose the one that fits your day. If flying through Bilbao but sleeping in San Sebastián, look at the direct airport coach before adding an unnecessary trip into Bilbao city. Keep your accommodation's check-in time in mind for either plan.
Where to Stay
Casco Viejo suits evenings around the old streets, while Abando can be convenient for central transport. Check whether the room faces a busy bar street and how far it is from your actual arrival station.
Getting Around
Walk along the river for central sightseeing. A Barik card may help with several transport journeys, but include its €3 purchase price and the minimum €5 credit top-up when comparing the cost.
Eating for Less
Order one or two pintxos first and ask for a hot dish if that is what the bar is known for. Check prices as you go; several small plates and drinks can cost more than one seated meal.
Worth Paying For
The Guggenheim is a good main visit if its current exhibitions interest you. Its published adult price at review is €18, but admission can vary with the exhibition period.
Skip / Save Your Money
Skip a second paid viewpoint if the riverside walk already gives you the kind of afternoon you want. The Artxanda outing is optional, not a required extra after the museum.
