A practical day trip by rail

Rotterdam and The Hague are about 25 km apart. A suitable direct NS train from Rotterdam Centraal to Den Haag Centraal takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Use the NS planner for the actual stop pattern and departure. Den Haag HS, also called Hollands Spoor, is another station and may suit a different address.

For a first central walk, Den Haag Centraal is a useful arrival. Leave time to walk towards the Hofvijver or your booked visit. A short rail journey does not remove the need for a buffer before a museum time slot.

NS train or metro E

RET metro E is another connection between Rotterdam and The Hague. It can suit an address along the line, although the NS train is often quicker between the main stations. Compare your whole journey in the RET planner, including any works or replacement transport. The route card's approximate 20-minute time refers to the NS rail option, not every metro journey.

These are different operators with different fares. Check out of one before checking into the other when changing. Do not assume an NS ticket covers the metro or that a RET day ticket covers NS trains. The amount in the comparison is an earlier rail estimate; price your chosen journey before travelling.

Plan the day around current openings

The Hague's museum and renovation notices matter for this trip. The Mauritshuis is closed through 20 September 2026, and its best-known Vermeer painting is away through 4 October. Check the city guide before booking around a particular artwork.

You can spend a full day in the centre, or leave an afternoon for the coast if the weather suits. The beach needs a further local journey. Keeping your Rotterdam room avoids packing for this short hop. For an onward stop, take a separate train to Delft. Our contactless travel guide covers the payment basics.
